Catching Up with the OMPH School 5th and 6th Grades

The Fifth and Sixth grades have been meeting together this fall for Math Group Mondays. The students work in mixed groups of four to six students and rotate through various stations. Students master computation skills by playing the 24 game. Geometric reasoning is taught through building designs with Pentominoes. Fifth and Sixth graders work on logic using Thinklab task cards, and are practicing skills including rounding, estimation, and finding the greatest common factor of two or more numbers.

The Fifth and Sixth grade students have been studying root words and their English derivatives during Integrated Language Arts class. On November 25th, they held their first joint “word auction,” in which students had to bid the number of root words they could deliver by naming the language of origin and the definition of the root word. The winner was Alessio Pereira, who correctly identified 15 Greek and Latin roots. The students will continue studying several words each week, and Mrs. Schulze and Mrs. DiNovis plan to hold another word auction in December.

The Sixth Grade class also continued their November tradition of leading the school-wide food drive, which benefits the OMPH Food Bank. Sixth Grade promoted the food drive to the other classes, and had students present their donations during a school Mass held before Thanksgiving break. Sixth Grade also sorted the donations, with the help of Mrs. Dreihaup. We are proud of what the Fifth and Sixth Grades are accomplishing inside and outside of their classroom!
