Mrs. Patricia Jacobs has been teaching Art to the OMPH Kindergarten through Fifth Grade students for thirteen years. This year, she is thrilled to implement "Art Goes to School," an art program that makes fine art accessible to elementary students. “This program is often called ‘A Traveling Museum,’ because it brings art from around the world into our children’s classrooms,” stated Mrs. Jacobs.
The purpose of Art Goes to School is to stimulate in students an interest and delight in art from all schools of art and historical periods. Art Goes to School is a volunteer art appreciation program. People of all ages who love working with children and are excited about art, like Mrs. Jacobs, become volunteer members. “Volunteers participate in workshops to help members learn about our annually changing portfolio of art reproductions,” explained Mrs. Jacobs.
Art Goes to School collaborates with the Barnes Foundation in Philadelphia, a prominent art museum, to provide art education to schools in our area. There are also times when Art Goes to School partners with the University of Pennsylvania on initiatives related to art education. Art Goes to School has a portfolio of over 2,000 different reproductions of artworks and sculptures from prehistoric to modern times!
“Together, we create lessons that are innovative, informal and interactive, making these art reproductions available to all our children, especially those who have never been able to visit a real art museum,” said Mrs. Jacobs. Art Goes to School volunteers will be visiting Kindergarten to 6th Grade classrooms at OMPH School during the year!
