OMPH School students in grades Kindergarten through 8th are blessed to have music lessons once a week as a special class.
“I try to unite the school with my music,” expressed OMPH School music teacher, Mrs. Sands.
She explained that Kindergarten through 8th are taught generally the same music lessons, but on different levels. Students begin the school year working with their voices using Do-Re-Mis.
“Music Ace 1 also has lessons and games about using your ears to match pitches,” said Mrs. Sands.
She uses the 8 note bells to develop the ear with exact pitches. OMPH students perform annually in a Christmas concert, with work beginning in October due to the concert being held at the beginning of December.
Currently, OMPH School’s music classes are working with Music Ace 2 to learn about tempos, steady beat and time signatures. February brings dancing! Spring brings work with note values and practicing for the Spring Concert in May. Students will close out the school year working on patriotic songs and marches.
“Hopefully, I am enabling students to want to keep music in their lives,” Mrs. Sands shared.
OMPH School is also able to offer instrument lessons through Lancaster Catholic High School. Lessons are available on-site at OMPH School during the school day for students in grades 4 through 8. Interested students can choose a brass, woodwind, or percussion instrument and receive one lesson each week with Mr. Logan Benoist. Families are able to rent the instruments through Menchey Music, which means students can try an instrument before making a commitment to purchase one.
Selected elementary music lesson students are asked to perform at the Lancaster Catholic High School Elementary Band Christmas concert. All elementary band students are able to perform at the LCHS Elementary Band Spring concert! OMPH School also fosters students’ love of music by encouraging them to perform in the choir during school Masses. Classrooms take turns leading the music during Mass each week, with Mrs. Sands and Mrs. Snyder providing the accompaniment. OMPH School thanks LCHS, Mrs. Sands, and all those dedicated to teaching music to our students!
